How does the travel allowance work?
Employers in the Netherlands are allowed to provide a tax-free travel allowance for days on which an employee travels to work using their own vehicle or public transport. This allowance is based on either the number of kilometers travelled or the actual travel days.
However, if an employee uses a lease bike to commute, no tax-free travel allowance can be provided for those specific days. This is a legal requirement.
To offset any potential loss of travel compensation, many employers choose to increase their monthly contribution towards the lease bike by the same amount that would otherwise be provided as a travel allowance.

What happens after I confirm my order?
You’ll probably want to start cycling as soon as possible. After selecting and configuring your bike, we’ll wait for approval from your employer and/or DirectLease. Once approved, we’ll ask your dealer to prepare the bike for delivery. You’ll receive an email when the bike is ready for pickup, or when it will be shipped if you’ve chosen home or office delivery.

Can a company car be combined with a leased bike?
Yes, an employee can have both a company car and a company bike. However, different rules apply – they fall under separate addition-to-income (bijtelling) schemes:
The bijtelling for a company bike is 7%.
The VAT correction must be handled separately.
A combination with private lease is also possible, but you’ll need documentation to justify any untaxed reimbursements for business kilometres driven in the car.

How does using the lease bike abroad work?
Please note that 24-hour roadside assistance is only valid within the Netherlands. However, your bike is insured while abroad. In case of emergency repairs, you can submit original invoices for reimbursement. The reimbursement will be processed after deducting the applicable deductible.
